My interest in health and wellness started when I was 16 years old. Since then, it has grown and matured, from focusing on the aesthetic to focusing on optimal health and well-being. Early on, I realized that eating right and exercising should not just be a sporadic effort, it should be a way of life. Yet even as I myself am health-conscious, I am surrounded by family and friends who suffer from chronic health conditions. My mother is prone to high cholesterol and my father is diabetic and hypertensive. Our family medical history is populated with liver disease, diabetes, and cancer. This is not a unique phenomenon, as I’m sure a lot of you have similar family medical histories. The Philippines is currently ranked in the top 15 in the world for diabetes prevalence. Yet there is hope as studies show that many chronic conditions can be prevented and even reversed through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. I found my calling then and made an important life choice to align my career and personal goals with the wellness needs of the people dear to me and of Filipinos. My search led me to functional medicine and I chose a university that will teach me about nutrition in the context of functional medicine.
In 2017, I attended Saybrook University to take my Master of Science degree in Integrative and Functional Nutrition.
In August 2019, I graduated from Saybrook University in California, USA. Since then, I’ve slowly established my nutrition practice and helped clients find actionable and sustainable solutions in using food as medicine to help them achieve optimal health.
To further formalize my functional medicine education, I took the AFMCP course of the Institute for Functional Medicine last May 2021.
The way I work with my clients is I first seek to understand their distinct health histories and backgrounds and then I work with them as their partner as they begin their own unique nutrition journey. I believe that nutrition is personal and that there is no one best diet for all. The key is to eat a wide variety of plant foods, adequate fats and proteins from good sources and to find the perfect balance that will support your health. With that, I invite you to start your journey to better nutrition with me, you can reach out by sending a message to kathleen@kultivo.ph.
